Oh my God!! It’s Diwali. For those of you shit heads who don’t know, Diwali is the Indian festival of lights. According to legends on Diwali Lord Ram came back to Ayodhya after a fourteen year exile during which his wife Lady Sita was kidnapped by Ravanna and stuff. So the people of Ayodhya decorated their homes by lighting diyas or lamps to welcome their king, Ram home. So even today people celebrate Diwali by lighting lamps and firecrackers.
Sunday was Diwali and it was sooo much fun. In the morning we all cleaned up the house and stuff. Then we made mithai or sweets called gujjia. That was fun and tasty. We made a little too much of filling though.
Then in the night we went for a drive around the city to see the lights. My mother was really excited about seeing the lighting at Commercial Street but for some reason this year they didn’t light it up. But Brigade Road was beautiful.
At around seven thirty we came home. We took our fire crackers and went to our neighbors. We lighted crackers after crackers then. Huge rockets 3000s which coloured the sky with 3000 different crackers, flowerpots which rose higher than the buildings, Sparklers for the little children, Chakras which spun around around till you got dizzy, All of wearing lehengas and other traditional clothes and dancing to typical Bollywood music till three in the morning. Ohhhh.. I wish Diwali came twice a year. And the gifts! I think my family has enough sweet to survive on it for two months now. I feel so sorry for those who don’t celebrate Diwali… It’s the best Indian festival other than Holi.
P.S. Diwali also marks the end of autumn and the beginning of winter… so happy winter people..
